Welcome from the Chair
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) was
formally established in 1958
around the nucleus of the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography.
It has since become one of the
major research universities
in the world.
Over
the first decade, UCSD built
its academic backbone by establishing
first-rate departments in the
natural sciences. UCSD started
its instructional role with
graduate students in the late
1950s, followed in 1964 with
