COPYING RESOURCES AND POLICY

Copying Policy

Undergraduate Courses
A unique index, PSYCLAS, is for copying course materials; e.g. syllabi and examinations.  This index number is not used to produce course readings. These are produced at Soft Reserves (http://softreserves.ucsd.edu/index.php) or at other duplicating agencies. Students pay for this reading material as they would for a textbook.

Psychology 194/196 Undergraduate Students
Department funds (including course index numbers) are not used to copy material for Honors or BS/MA track projects. These are a student's responsibility unless a faculty member authorizes use of grant funds. To ensure that faculty members' funds are not misused, undergraduates cannot use the department green copy cards. Copier cards valid to specific index numbers can be ordered by labs from Jenny Cantor.

Psychology 99 & 199 Undergraduate Students
Copying for 99s and 199s is charged to faculty grants. For faculty members without grant funds, copying is charged to their department support index numbers.

Graduate Courses
Use PSYCLAS to copy syllabi and examinations, but not to duplicate course readings. Instead, send course reading to Soft Reserves (http://softreserves.ucsd.edu/index.php) or other duplicating agencies. Students pay for this reading material(as they would for a textbook.

Other Graduate Copying

PSY7665 is the index for graduate students' personal copying. It is encoded on their campus photo ID cards to be swiped through the readers on the Department's copy machines. Copying charges are recorded; when a balance exceeds $20, the student is billed.  Personal copying includes materials like a qualifying exam or research not sponsored by faculty members. These are never charged to department budgets, including PSYCLAS.

Copying Resources

Department Copy Machines
Your UCSD ID cards, and the two green department copy cards in the main office, are used with the two department copy machines on the fifth floor of McGill Hall. Request index numbers to be added to your ID card from Jenny Cantor.  The copier is activated when you swipe your ID or department card through the reader and enter a valid code. Costs are recharged automatically.

University Libraries
Your ID and the department cards will not work with any self-serve machine or self-serve laser printer in any of the University libraries. Jenny Cantor can order a library debit card for personal or lab use.

You can also buy a card a minimum of $1 at any library self-serve card service center. The first 50 cents of the $1 fee pays for the card. The remaining 50 cents will make 5 copies. Add value to this card by feeding more cash into the self-service machine.

Self-service machines are all over the Geisel library; at the Imprints Copy Center on the main floor; in the main floor reference and periodical sections; on the main floor, in the west wing Social Sciences reference section.

Electronic course, digital images & audio images
The UCSD Libraries offers online publishing of text materials, audio and graphic files at no cost at the library website. http://coursematerials.ucsd.edu/creserves.shtml

Soft Reserves
Send course readings, homework solutions, sample exams, or any printed item. Soft Reserves duplicates and sells (at no profit) these items to the students. Attach a note to the item, with your name, course number, approximate enrollment, and phone number, and mail to Soft Reserves, Mail Code 0325. The first copy made of materials sent to Soft Reserves can be done on the undergraduate course copying number. Though you can also give soft reserves the books you wish to copy out of and have them make the original copy as well. Soft Reserves is next to the Food Co-op in the old Student Center.

Imprints
Imprints is the UCSD print resource center. For syllabi, midterms, final exams, and/or large size posters, this is a cost effective, labor saving copy resource; collating, interleaving, stapling, and delivery of work are free.  Information about all Imprints locations and services is at http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,16265,00.html

Print Connection is Imprints on-line ordering system. This is the campus web-based print submission system where you manage all your copying needs from your computer.  Complete information is at http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,16265,00.html.  If you need help registering, ask Jenny for assistance (44299 or jcantor@ucsd.edu).

Faculty Research and Other Material
Use your individual department index number to copy committee work, recommendation letters and for other administrative business. Research sponsored by faculty members should be charged to the individual faculty members' grants, only with their permission. Ask Jenny to have index numbers encoded to your campus photo ID card, or use the Department cards kept in the main office at the front desk.
