Reversed phi movement

Stuart Anstis

Movie #1: When a positive picture is replaced by its own negative, motion is seen in the reverse direction, toward the earlier stimulus. The two top rows fade back and forth between two static words 'MOTION', printed in black and light yellow ink. The bottom stationary row shows that the yellow word is actually displaced to the left of the black, but during motion in the upper rows it seems to be diplaced to the right.

Movie #2: The symbols alternate between black and white on alternate frames. Consequently they appear to rotate counterclockwise, although if you track any small symbol you will see that it actually rotates clockwise. On stopping the movie you will see a clockwise motion aftereffect, appropriate to the subjective rotation (which is where the motion energy is), not the objective displacement.
